REVIEW:
Opening Night Showing @ NBFF ’22
…
It’s absurd that this was made (in a good way). My prior knowledge of Weird Al was honestly mostly reliant upon the episode in How I Met Your Mother. What a fascinating way to tell a Weird Al story, this film is.
THIS is how you make a “fictional biopic.” It uses the power of fiction to further celebrate and embrace the positive, fan-beloved aspects of the figure in question. And with great power, comes great responsibility. Unlike a certain 2022 fictional biopic, the filmmakers here understand this responsibility and create a fiction rooted in truth (the essence of Weird Al’s persona informs the fictional content).
This film is hilarious, it’s fun, at times heart-warming, constantly absurd — and most of all, it’s very weird. My favorite biopic of the year.
P.S.
There are some great cameos.
